Homecoming Dance Brainstorm

Hi ASB, Here is everything we discussed at boot camp below. Please let us know you have any more ideas or you would like to expand/improve on these existing ideas. We would really appreciate input for the venue, time, incentives, dance+game collaborations, food, and more

 Dance + Game
 - food/concessions competition?
 - art exhibit (dance/game/both?)
- royalty (dance/game/both?") - keep in mind photos, parents, and traditional homecoming royalty
 - homecoming rubric (points applied to dance/game/both) - keep in mind the issue for "paying for v points"
 - dance + game ticket - package, discount, free vouchers?
 - concessions
 - asb card not free?

Creative Ideas
- boba/ice cream bar
 - mini golf
- spike ball - photo station during week and put them up on a photo wall
 - Chill Area (lounge)
 - homecoming video release
- collage station
- festival vibes (phomo?, aesthetic)

 Venue
 - proximity to dance
 - quad + cafeteria
 - fieldhouse

Time (football game usually ends at 8/9)
 - 8-11 pm
 - 8:30-11 pm
*have to set up/clean up, custodial services overtime start at 11pm

Extra Things to keep in mind:
Informal - use that to our advantage, hands-on activities
 Name Change - "celebration"
Mr Lee's Advice: What is at the dance that will make students want to go after a long hoco week?

This is so much haha but any input and ideas is important so contribute!! We appreciate it.

 Thanks, Social

  1. I think that keeping the polaroids until later in the week is good for attendance, but it would be a lot more work to keep track of who is in the photos and who in the photo gets to keep the physical copy. There might also be pressure to take a good photo since polaroid film is really expensive and each group of students would probably only have one chance to take a good photo. Having cute photo locations at the dance seems a little more feasible because they can take as many photos as they want, but there is the possible issue of traffic if too many people want to take photos at a specific location.
My team and I talked about the ice cream bar idea, and we think the ice cream bar is a good idea because people will have eaten from the concession stands at the football game and might want something sweeter as a dessert. A make your own ice cream stand would also be more interactive and cater towards the "informal" aspect of the dance.

  2. I think we should have the dance start at 8:30 just so that we won't be "stealing" students from the homecoming game, as we currently don't know when exactly the game will be over. Also, I think we should keep the tradition of announcing and presenting homecoming royalty at the game to ensure that any parents who want to take pictures have the chance to. However, we could then announce/inform them go to the dance afterwards to claim a small prize or gift, which could help attract their friends to attend the dance and bring participation up as well. This way, we won't be taking away the chance for parents to take pictures while also ensuring that the "grandness" or glory of announcing and presenting homecoming royalty is maintained like previous years. I also think that we could use the casual theme of our dance to our advantage by emphasizing it as simply "a time to come hang out and celebrate with friends" rather than the more formal, dressy version from previous years because I know some people who did not attend semi-formal dances because they didn't want to put the effort in getting dressed up.

  3. Since I'm not extremely well-versed in the logistics of the Homecoming game and the Homecoming celebration, my ideas will be more targeted towards increasing freshmen interest. In middle school, all of the dances consisted of a DJ and food, but after a couple dances, attendance started to decrease. I think there should definitely be more of a focus on making it different from an ordinary dance. I liked the idea about photo backdrops and making it "aesthetic," but I think the only issue is that taking a photo only holds people's interest for so long, and I'm assuming people will have to spend time standing in line, which might not be great since most people will be tired. I think just having carnival-like games and activities like mini golf would be nice. I also had some more extravagant ideas, but they aren't very realistic nor budget friendly. My first idea was renting a bouncy house, but I'm sure that will be a lot of work, and my other idea was a ball pit, but again would take a lot of funds and resources. Overall, I think the best way to make the dance/celebration more attractive is by making it unique and stand out from other dances.

  4. I think that instead of doing the polaroids thing (where you keep them until the dance/celebration) to attract people into the event, we could always do professional photos. To expand, I think that we could bring in all the different classes' decorations from homecoming week and put it all in one central area of the dance/celebration, or even have a photo backdrop that relates to homecoming, and have an ASB student or a photographer with a high quality camera offer to take more high quality photos of different groups in front of these decorations/backdrop (sort of like how Miller's FD did it - so there would be a line to the photoshoot area). The high quality photos can have the words "Homecoming 2019" on them or something like that and can be shared with the students online.

In terms of timing (this might be a really bad idea), I was thinking of possibly making the dance/celebration more or less after the game ends or a little closer to that time, so you wouldn't need to “steal” any students. That would make the dance/celebration extremely short, but at the same time, people are going to be tired anyway, and the point of the dance/celebration is tradition wise, a way to wrap up homecoming, and we could just make it short but executed really well. People could come straight to the dance/celebration nearly after the game that way, and I think the most important part of the dance/celebration would be including ways for people to really reflect on homecoming because it is ending. We could always play a slideshow of the hoco photos like last year, but also in terms of “hands-on activities” we could make them in theme to our overall homecoming theme.

For announcing which class wins at the dance, I think we could make that more unique and a bigger thing this year. Instead of just announcing over the speakers at the dance, we could always have more of a podium, and some item that represents each class can go on the podium while the announcements are happening and students can watch that.

Last going off of Sydnie’s comment at the top, she mentioned something about a gift to attract people. We could always have some small custom item that relates to homecoming that could serve as a memory (a souvenir in a way).

  5. Carolyn had a good point about the polaroids. In order to keep track we could ask them to write a name down on the back or into a spreadsheet and number each polaroid for identification. I was thinking about having the photo stations somewhere at every skit, one at each gauntlet, one at the art exhibit, one at the FB game, and one at the dance/celebration. Because films are expensive, (1) we can have a 1 group 1 take policy so we don't waste films and/or (2) we can offer them a choice of letting the photos hang in a homecoming memory wall FOR FREE on campus where it can be viewed by all students until the end of 1st semester/end of school year and then be discarded or if they want to keep them, we can charge them a small amount.

Regarding the times, I think it should go from 8:30-11:30. From my experiences, many students don't show up or it doesn't get super hype in the 1st 30mins so having it start 30min before the game might end gives time for some students to trickle in and once the game is done students will be more likely to attend because there are already people at the dance/celebration and won't feel "alone".

When exiting the football game, we could have a super extra and flashy entrance to the dance to catch the eyes of students who are leaving. (red carpet lined with lights or glow in the dark signs or a path created by lights)

Stephen's movie/lounge idea also seems like a great idea. We could maybe have popcorn & some candy in that room for people to snack on while watching whatever is playing. I'm not exactly sure what the turn around time is for every skit video but it might be tough to edit all of those in time for the dance. Film Club is looking to create vlog style videos and theme intros for each class and we can possibly partner w them and show case those too. or we can have the student body vote on a couple different movies and show the winning choice
